Environmental Organizations Standing With Us
The proposed quarry site sits within the Little River Valley — a floodplain with sensitive wetlands, native habitat, and a watershed that feeds private wells throughout the region. Environmental organizations have raised concerns about irreversible hydrological changes, loss of wildlife habitat, and long-term threats to water quality and ecosystem health.

Why We Oppose The Quarry
If you live in the Fort Wayne area, you’ve probably heard about a controversial quarry project along Homestead Road in southwest Allen County. US Aggregates, a subsidiary of The Heritage Group, proposes a mixed-use development, including a quarry, asphalt plant, concrete facility, and commercial development. This site, over 800 acres in size, lies in close proximity to Eagle Marsh, our largest property. The project will require extensive permits and rezoning, a process that may take several years.
We oppose the quarry proposal. The mission of Little River Wetlands Project is to restore and protect as much of the historic wetlands of the Little River Valley as possible. As such, LRWP opposes any type of development in the valley, whether residential, commercial, or industrial. Our reason is simple: it takes away the opportunity to restore this land to the vital wetland ecosystems that benefit us all.
As the quarry proposal wends its way through the approvals process, we’re working to understand any potential outcomes and how they might affect our existing properties—as well as land that could yet be restored throughout the Little River Valley. We also recognize the personal impact on our staff, donors, and volunteers, many of whom live in the Aboite township area.
LRWP has worked to protect the Little River Valley since our inception 35 years ago. We will continue to navigate the unfolding events with integrity and transparency. Have a question about how we see things? You’re always welcome to reach out. We’re glad to share what we’ve learned about the project.
Stating Opposition To The Proposed Quarry On Homestead Road
We (the Southwest Conservation Club) stand with the Little River Wetlands Project and those local residents who are in opposition to the proposed quarry project along Homestead Road. Changes to the hydrology of the Little River Valley, the risk of health problems to the residents of Waynedale and other southwest neighbors, and endangerment to the native organisms we strive to protect are the chief reasons for our opposition.
The Southwest Conservation Club is located on Bluffton Road in the Waynedale area. It is a 37 acre wildlife reserve consisting of a prairie, campground, an archery course, woodlots, four ponds, a trap and skeet field, hiking trails, and a clubhouse. It was chartered in 1938 and has been in continual existence since that time.
The purpose and pledge of Southwest Conservation Club is to promote true sportsmanship and principles of broad conservation, to promote legislation designed to conserve and restore wildlife in our coverts and waters, and to promote and co-operate in the beautification and purification of our rivers.
Approved by the Southwest Conservation Club Board of Directors and the members of the Club on 4/13/2026.
