Labor & Unions Standing With Us
Union locals and worker organizations have raised concerns about the quarry's impact on their members — many of whom live in southwest Fort Wayne, send their children to nearby schools, and travel Homestead Road daily to reach the manufacturing facilities they represent.
1 labor organization on the record.
I am writing to express strong opposition to the proposed quarry and associated industrial development planned for southwest Fort Wayne.
Many of our over 7,000+ members live in southwest Fort Wayne. Many of our children and grandchildren attend the schools that are located near the proposed quarry and parents have raised serious and well-founded concerns regarding this proposal, including potential impacts to groundwater and private wells, air quality from particulate and silica dust. Many of our members travel Homestead Road to and from the manufacturing facilities UAW Local 2209 represents and are also concerned about the increased heavy truck traffic and road maintenance the proposed quarry would bring about. The proposed site is very close to established, as well as newly developing neighborhoods. Families chose to move here for the closeness to the city’s amenities, while maintaining a quiet environmental surrounding.
UAW Local 2209 members work hard to earn a living to be able to afford to live in southwest Fort Wayne. The neighborhoods directly affected represent hard work and dedication to provide for each one’s family the best that they can. We support all of those who are opposed to this project, including, but not limited to neighborhood associations, school officials, healthcare leaders, and the Fort Wayne City Council have all publicly expressed serious concerns or outright opposition, reflecting the breadth and consistency of community sentiment.
UAW Local 2209 respectfully urges county decision-makers to reject this proposal and to continue to explore development that benefits all parties involved. Economic development happens when all areas of the community come to agreement. Although we as a union support growth and progress, we want to share the concerns our members have and be the voice for them.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I ask that you stand with the residents of southwest Fort Wayne and deny approval of this proposed quarry development.
